History of SAP ERP
R1 architecture ( R stands for Real-time and 1 stands for 1-tier or 1 layer) there was only the Database layer.
1979 - R2 architecture
1st layer - Presentation layer - User Interface(UI) s/w - SAP GUI - used to login into GUI
2nd layer - Database layer
1992 - R3 architecture
1st layer - Presentation layer
2nd layer - Application layer
3rd layer - Database layer
Real-time - where there is no time lag between the database and the tine when the transaction happened (Ex : ATM) updates the database immediately unlike before where it would take few days to update the passbook/database.
Application layer - It acts as a processing machine between the executed commands by the user through GUI(Presentation layer) and Database layer.
